Work begins on house in Radford 01/03/2012
On December 10th 2011, a team of Habitat for Humanity volunteers and our home owner partner family began work on refurbishing a house in Radford and we look forward to having it ready for the family to move into. The house will provide an affordable, decent and secure place for the family and will give them hope for a better future. Our partner family is now working on their sweat equity contribution towards owning the house. Once their partnership requirements are met and the house has been refurbished it will be time to schedule the move, and have a dedication ceremony to hand over the keys to a new home! As we start a new year we look back at the old. During 2010 Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley continued to re-establish financial stability and to make good progress on the meeting the challenges it faced in 2009 following the resignation of its Executive Director. Our progress is a direct result of the continued support recieved from the people in the New River Valley. Individual donations, donations from church groups and from local businesses help us to achieve Habitat's mission of building houses for those in need in partnership with the homeowners who contribute sweat equity and make no interest mortgage payments. Sales at our Restore in Pulaski have improved with new management and with donations of new and surplus home improvement materials, furniture and appliances. Some donors have taken advantage of our Cars for Homes Program to donate a used car, boat or RV. Thankyou to all of our donors, volunteers, and customers for helping Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley continue to provide service and for your support of our mission to eliminate poverty housing. When you donate to Habitat you not only help build houses, but you also build hope for stronger, decent co Pottersville- Its a wonderful life 12/21/2010
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is to watch Jimmy Stewart in that classic movie " Its a Wonderful Life. In one scene, a young Mr. Baily eloquently and passionately argues how important it is to have an institution such as Baily's Building and Loan were members of the community that can not get a mortgage through Mr. Potter's Bank can have access to funds. He argues that those who drive taxis, are policemen, work in local pharmacies, and in industries owned by Mr Potter's Bank should be able to strive towards home ownership rather than renting from Mr. Potter. With home ownership and affordable mortgages, they could take pride in the community and contribute to it. In the end they would create a community which cared for their neighbours instead of a Pottersville focused only on greed. As a result of his speech Mr Baily was asked to take on the responsibility of managing Baily's Building and Loans and as the angel secondclass (Gabriel) demonstrates- he had a wonderful life which touched and improved the life of many others. I struck me this year that Habitat for Humanity has the potential to transform communities in the same way. By partnering with the community to build decent affordable homes for those in need in the community and by offerring no interest mortgages to home owners, Habitat helps to transform , not only the lives of new homeowners, but of those who volunteer, those who donate materials, and those who sponsor homes. In this season of giving, I am reminded of how powerful the gift can be can be on those who are doing the giving. Celebrate America Recycles Day 11/08/2010

Virginia Tech Habitat for Humanity Start up! 11/03/2010
The Virginia Tech Habitat for Humanity campus chapter is being rechartered. Virginia Tech is building on its strong history of service to the community. This fall, students at Tech are applying to Habitat for Humanity International, with the support of Habitat for Humanity Inc. of the New River Valley for approval to renew thier charter. If approved, Virginia Tech will join hundreds of campus chapters around the world who are helping to end poverty housing from the face of the earth. The VT Habitat for Humanity hopes to build on the successes and relationships developed by the previous campus chapter at Virginia Tech. It hopes to engage students in building and fundraising - and in raising awareness about the need for affordable housing and how they can make a difference. |
